Just Another Day

31 Mar

This morning, I headed over to see a doctor who specializes in “respiratory problems.” It turns out I have a touch of bronchitis, but we went through the whole rigamarole of x-rays and that blow tube thing they use to see how much lung power you have. Anyway, I thought it was kind of expensive, but I’ve gotten spoiled in Morocco.

Here’s a breakdown:

Office Visit : 200 DH

2 X-Rays : 400 DH

Breathing Test : 750 DH

Plus, I got the x-rays, which is kind of cool. The doctor speaks English, and is female, which was a relief on both counts…especially when she asked me to take off everything above the waist so she could listen to my lungs!
Then I went to have lunch, and I found a really cool little cafe with old-style stainless steel countertops, just opposite Hotel Splendid, which is at 8 Rue Ghazza. Nice staff and tasty food.

I called my husband to tell him what the status was, and he seemed fairly nonchalant. “Oh, bronchite, no problem, did you get some medicine?” He seemed more interested in telling me about his adventure today in Ouarzazate – he had to take his 84 year old father there to get a renewal for his gun permit. Did you think I perhaps meant a gun permit for my husband? Au contraire, mes amis! It’s for his father, and gets renewed yearly. I once made the mistake of asking why he needed a gun, exactly, and was told that he used to use it for hunting moufflon (a kind of wild sheep) in the mountains. Then I pointed out that he hadn’t been up in the mountains for eons, so why keep it? Hamou said, “Well, he wants it. Are you going to tell him he can’t have it?” Um, no.

I hope you feel better – For bronchitis I always grab ahandful of zatar and boil it in a big pot of water and then inhale the steam – works very well! – a trick I learned from my mother in law :)
