Trains, Buses, and Taxis

27 Oct

I live about an hour from my parents. If I didn’t have a car, do you think that there would be an alternate method of transportation to visit them? In Morocco, I have several choices. First, the trains, which I love – except during Semana Santa and other major holidays. Second, buses – CTM and Supratours are great. Third, “Grand Taxis” and “Petite Taxis.” Do I have any of those options here? Nooooo. I’d love to pack my train case for a long weekend, put together a box of cookies, and take the train up to Mount Vernon. It used to go there, you know. Before the auto lobbyists destroyed the country, that is.

This is my train case, it’s a vintage Schwayder Samsonite from the 1940′s. It keeps my sewing stuff organized for now.

A coole mouth, and warme feet, live long. – George Herbert

25 Oct

I’m still working on the “cool mouth” part, but I have the feet covered. As you can see below, I have new Halloween slipper socks – which I’ll be wearing all winter, because they have a neat skull and crossbones on them. And the strap buttons, isn’t that cunning? You may wonder why I’m so excited about a $5.99 Target purchase, but my shoe troubles in Morocco have scarred me forever. I’m at least a size 43, which is almost impossible to find in women’s styles. Even if it is a 43, it’s the Moroccan idea of a 43, where about an inch of your heel hangs off the back of the mule/slipper. After walking around for 30 minutes like that, especially with a shoe that’s nothing but wood with a tiny bit of leather stretched over it, your heel feels like it’s being sliced in half.

In comparison, these are heavenly.

Meme from Columbus Foodie

24 Oct

I read a great blog written by a local “Columbus-ite,” and she just posted a meme about the 8 foods she won’t give up, originally found on Slashfood. Here are mine, and I longed for them every day in Morocco.

Mountain Dew – ok, not a food, but nectar of the gods nonetheless.

Butter – properly salted, preferably sea salt, mmm.

Cheese – Except for blue cheese – I had it once on a flight to France, and could never eat it again. But manchego, or sharp cheddar, oh joy.

Indian food – Fine, not a single ingredient food, but I could live on Indian food and never tire of it.

Sushi – The best sushi I ever had was in Rabat, isn’t that crazy?

Fried Potatoes – Especially when my Dad makes them. You practically have to stab my hand with a fork to get any for yourself.

Crab Legs – I once ate so many for an “All-You-Can-Eat” crab leg special, that the manager had to come out to tell me that they ran out, and he comped my meal and those of my 3 friends. Woo! No, the friends weren’t helping me eat them.

Chocolate – I like Hershey’s chocolate, being so close to PA and all.

Strong Irish Tea – Don’t speak to me before 10am unless I’ve had a cuppa.

Oops, that was 9. I have a lot of favorites. What have I given up, for the most part? First, alcohol – I have a margarita once in a blue moon. Second, pork – because I sort of like piggies. They’re really intelligent and affectionate, and I feel bad using them in my Scotch Eggs recipe.
