Arabic on a Rug
Someone is selling an unusual Moroccan rug on eBay, with two Arabic words as part of the design. They say this carpet is from the 40-50s (which I kind of find difficult to believe, especially after seeing the label), but it’s the words I find interesting. From what I can make out, they say “Jan” and “Walt.” Made for a couple, perhaps?

Bismeellah and Treq Sslema to My Proposal
The Fulbright application (and its numerous supporting materials) has been FedExed, and it’s too late to back out now! Thanks to assistance from several extraordinarily helpful people, I think I have a good proposal. Now the waiting begins – they don’t send out a letter until January 31st to say if you’ve made it past the 1st round. My nails are in shreds already.

Khadija Teri had this on her blog, and since I’m kind of distracted at the moment, I’m using it for today’s post.

I am thinking about… carving a pumpkin.
I said… more than I should have, so I’m learning to just listen!
I want.. to be more organized.
I wish… that our families weren’t on two different continents.
I miss… my next-door neighbor in Rabat, Fatna.
I hear… Hamou taking a shower, classical music on TV, and Dhuhr from my Athan program.
I wonder… if I’ll ever have kids.
I regret… not studying languages more when I was younger.
I dance… whenever I hear Vince Guaraldi.
I cry… when I see any animal suffering.
I am not always… patient.
I write… little notes to my dad with funny clippings from the newspaper.
I need… a copy of Rosetta Stone Arabic.
I finish… projects better when I have a deadline – I like the pressure.
Linky Linky
I have two great links for you today.
The first is a brief travelogue written by a guy from Portland who took a 9 day trip to Morocco. I like his writing style, and it seems like he had a good trip.
The second link is to a blog written by two crazy fools (I mean that in a most complimentary way), Caitlin and Samuel Dowe-Sandes, who sold their house in LA and used the proceeds to move to Morocco for a year. Yes, that would be the same Samuel who was once a development executive for Paramount, not to mention a producer of three films. His wife is a super-talented advertising/public relations whiz, Harvard grad, former Paris resident…augh, I’m feeling like a slacker. Google them if you’re interested, folks, but I’m personally enthralled by their adventures in Marrakech so far – and I think you will be too.
