Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely – Lord Acton

05 Nov

I just read something horrifying, and I hope the articles written about it are taking it out of context – if not, I’m starting to make plans for leaving the U.S. permanently.

“The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (HSA) has proposed that all
airlines, cruise lines-even fishing boats-be required to obtain
clearance for each passenger they propose taking into or out of the
United States.

It doesn’t matter if you have a U.S. Passport – a “travel document”
that now, absent a court order to the contrary, gives you a virtually
unqualified right to enter or leave the United States, any time you
want. When the DHS system comes into effect next January, if the
agency says “no” to a clearance request, or doesn’t answer the
request at all, you won’t be permitted to enter-or leave-the United
States.” [link]

IT Growth – Where?

Morocco plans to triple IT growth in 2006-2012

Morocco plans to triple telecom and information technology (IT) growth, with an 18% annual increase in the period 2006-2012, through a programme of state support, subsidies and training, Jamal Benhamou, chief executive of Morocco’s Federation for Information Technologies, Telecommunications and Offshoring said in an interview to Reuters on Thursday (November 2nd). He considers the plan ambitious, but realistic. The Progress Contract for 2006-2012 envisages state subsidies and incentives worth 1.5 billion dirhams by 2008. According to Benhamou, the sector’s turnover is expected to expand to 60 billion dirhams in 2012 from a projected 30 billion dirhams this year. (Reuters)”

Oh really? Maybe they should stop teaching Pascal in the rural “technical schools” then. It’s so irritating, because Morocco has a gazillion 20-somethings who are super-intelligent and skilled in all sorts of IT stuff – networks, web design, administrative support – but via nepotism etc… all of the jobs where they could be making a difference are filled by those who just want their paycheck and pension.

Hairdresser

This is right after I had a “blowout” done. The same hairdresser cut my hair the time before this visit – can you believe she’s a deaf mute? I just made a few hand signs and let her have at it. She did a great job!
