Egypt – The Downward Spiral

20 Nov

“Police in Cairo have detained a blogger whose posts have been critical of the Egyptian government. Rami Siyam, who blogs under the name of Ayyoub, was detained along with three friends after leaving the house of a fellow blogger late at night. No reasons have been given for Mr Siyam’s detention. The other friends were released after being questioned.

In recent weeks, bloggers have been exposing what they say was the sexual harassment of women at night in downtown Cairo in full view of police who did not intervene.”

Ow, ??? ?????

20 Nov

I had a molar pulled today – but the dentist was great, I hardly felt a thing, just a pulling sensation. Even now (about 6 hours later) it’s ok – I just took some ibuprofen for the pain, which wasn’t bad. I’m blaming six months of mint tea, then practically ODing on Mountain Dew once I was back in the States.

I thank my lucky stars that I have access to good health care here – which, by the way, was provided by a student dentist at the Ohio State College of Dentistry for the grand total of $81, since I don’t have dental insurance. Hamou told me about his experiences with tooth pulling in Morocco – he’s had it done, sans anesthesia, and so have many members of his family. When he was little and they had to pull some of his mom’s teeth, he said that they tied her head down, and then four people pinned her arms and legs. He left the room, because he couldn’t stand it, but he said, “I heard her scream.” Gah, childhood trauma.
