Aïn Sebaa

08 Feb

I have a reader from Aïn Sebaa, and I love the name of that town. “Eye of the Lion,” how cool is that? I have so many memories of coming through on the train and listening for to the announcements. “Casa Port, Ain Sebaa, Mohammedia, Bouznika, Skhirat,Temara Plage, Agdal, Rabat Ville!!!”

:) it’s “Lion’s spring”. Ain means both eye and spring.

Oh shoot, maybe my husband mistranslated it, too? How do you know when it changes meaning?

I call springs “aghbalou,” too – that’s my husband’s fault, LOL.

I found out that it can have THREE meanings :

“The word ambiguity in Arabic is of 2 types; ambiguity that is common in all languages; i.e. the homographic one (???? meaning “eye”, “spring”, and “spy”)…”

like spring (season) and spring (water spring) !

or maybe we are all mistaken and it’s about a CIA lion-agent : a spy lion :D

    eye spy lion.

I love the train announcements too. Especially when the lady in the Arabic version says “Ma-RA-kush.”
