Khalil al-Zahawi Murdered

29 May

I’d like Bush to stand in front of me, without smirking, blustering, or repeating buzzwords, and tell me that we’re making progress in Iraq.

Khalil al-Zahawi was the most famous practitioner in Iraq of the art of writing classical Arabic script.

He was outside his house in the New Baghdad district of the city on Saturday when he was ambushed by gunmen and killed.

More here. Picture of al-Zahawi working here.

How very sad, and how very pointless. Perhaps not so very surprising, not only in light in light of our utter failure to quell the violence in Iraq but also in light of our utter indifference to preserving Iraq’s millennia old cultural heritage, evident from the moment the National Museum was sacked.
