Damn Donkey

05 Jul

OK, people, here’s your donkey.

It’s the same damn donkey that I saw every day in the Gorge, accompanied by his donkey owner – I couldn’t decide if the owner looked like him, or he looked like the donkey, but they were practically twins.

It’s the same damn donkey that insisted on braying every day during my siesta, no matter when that siesta might be.

It’s the same damn donkey that smugly looked at all the nomad donkeys shuffling by with their water jugs and feed sacks.

This donkey, despite looking cute and authentically Moroccan, is not friendly, and should not inspire feelings of loyalty amongst my limited readership – but the universe is not fair.

For your educational fun, Donkey (as Cat mentioned) is “h’mar” in Darija, “arhayud” in Berber.

Bad Days

23 May

Inspired by Cat in Rabat’s week-long “bad Morocco day,” I have my own suffering to relate.

First, though, I want to mention that I have never had any problem with cars in Morocco, as poor Cat has – they seem to be magnetically drawn to her. I can think of a couple of reasons for this discrepancy, though.

1. Cat is petite, at least compared to yours truly, and they probably figure the damage from hitting her would be negligible. If they hit me, however, it would be comparable to running into a moose, or something.

2. The boyfriend prior to my dear husband was a race car driver. (NASCAR, to be exact) I am very used to cars zooming by within inches, in fact, I often stick a foot out to kick them as they pass. That’s quite a shock for the Moroccan “drivers,” let me tell you.

On to my bad Morocco days… Read the rest of this entry »

Jet4You (Part II)

30 Mar

I noticed that many people come to my site looking for information on the new airline here in Morocco, Jet4You. That’s not very flattering, but as a public service, here’s some info.

- Their new website is still just a holding page with contact info. Yes, I know that’s annoying.

- They completed their first commercial flight on February 26, with a total of 176 passengers flying from Paris Orly to Marrakech.

- After March 30, they will have 11 flights per week. 7 for Orly-Marrakech,  2 for Orly-Fes, and 2 for Orly-Agadir.

- Supposedly, they’re operating on a code-share basis with Corsair. I checked Corsair’s website, and they do offer the above listed destinations.

Rat!

01 Feb

I finally caught my “roommate” (Rattus norvegicus) tonight. I felt bad, because it was an awful way to go – getting caught in a big black rat trap, that is – but the poop all over the house was just too much for even an extreme animal lover to stand. Notice to rats and cockroaches – look elsewhere for lodging, please.
Above photo is just an example, it seemed too ghoulish to take a picture of “my” rat post-mortem.
