Well, some of you may have noticed that there was a notice up for a bit stating that this website was over its bandwidth limit. Sadly, it’s true - though I am hardly popular enough to ever dream that would happen. What caused it was that nifty little plugin that allowed me to stream songs - it turns out that Skinny Puppy and Marcy Playground are extremely popular, who knew?

Having said that, I’m still getting more traffic every month, so I’ve had to switch hosting providers to get more bandwidth - though I still love you, Heather! Anyone who wants great and inexpensive hosting with excellent personal service should contact her right this minute.

Luckily, I make regular backups of my Wordpress database, so I just re-loaded it - but now I have to go find a cool Wordpress template again. Ah well, I like changing it anyway.

I’ve activated a plugin that allows commenters to subscribe to the post they just commented on - it will send you email notifications when someone makes a new comment.

I did this because I hate going back to other people’s blogs to see if there are any comments after or in response to mine - it makes me look like a stalker in their stats programs!

I changed the theme again. I just can’t help it. If I look at the same old theme for too long, I don’t feel like posting.

I took the opportunity to update to WP 2.1 (very exciting) and had a lot of fun looking through various color theme choosers. I took a class on color in high school (actually via Kenyon College), and I earned a lot then that is slooooowly coming back to me now.

Now I need to find another home for the donkey…

Pepsi ChallengeIn the spirit of MLK Day, here’s one of the projects I’m working on - a website for the just released (Jan 9th!) book, “The Real Pepsi Challenge” by Stephanie Capparell. The website also has her other work, which includes a business book on Ernest Shackleton and a documentary about Nazim Hikmet.

“From Booklist
Imagine the state of race relations in segregated America in 1946. Capparell, a journalist, describes the remarkable decision by the Pepsi Company to hire 12 black persons as upper-level salespeople to develop the black market. The team operated for more than four years, and in soliciting blacks everywhere, they surpassed their profit goals. Generating profits was their sole purpose.

However, this is also a story of unintended consequences, including introducing diversity into corporate America, revolutionizing the strategies of niche marketing, featuring black actors in ads, and identifying blacks as an important consumer segment.

Capparell extensively interviewed the six living members of that team formed 60 years ago who were genuine pioneers in overcoming prejudice within a large corporation and dealing with Jim Crow laws of segregation while traveling. This is a snapshot in time, with its profit successes but also its failures. Although it did not change the business world, it set the stage for ambitious black executives who followed them.
